This ladder is not yet attributed to a specific organisation. Federations differ in belt colours and time requirements.

Tennen Rishin-ryu, founded by Kando Kuraa in 1789 in Edo (Tokyo), is the iconic samurai koryu fencing school made famous by Shinsengumi commanders (Kondo Isami, Hijikata Toshizo). Its 5-license structure (Shoden to Menkyo Kaiden) evaluates heavy Bokken striking, deep power cuts, Kenjutsu, Iaijutsu, and Yawara grappling.

Shoden (Beginning Transmission)

Typical gap since previous grade: 12 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Basic Seigan no Kamae stances, heavy Bokken cuts, and paired introductory kata.

Symbolism & Meaning

Famous Edo koryu school (1789) made famous by Shinsengumi leaders (Kondo, Hijikata).

Chuden (Middle Transmission)

Typical gap since previous grade: 24 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Iaijutsu sword drawing, Bojutsu staff combat, and close-range neutralization.

Symbolism & Meaning

Emphasis on overwhelming power of the first strike & practical street efficacy.

Okuden (Deep Transmission)

Typical gap since previous grade: 36 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Sword grappling Kumiuchi, Kodachi short sword combat, and weapon disarming.

Symbolism & Meaning

Tactics used by Shinsengumi officers patrolling Kyoto streets.

Menkyo (Teaching License / Shihan)

Typical gap since previous grade: 60 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Official technique scroll. Authorization to lead dōjō in Kondo lineage.

Symbolism & Meaning

Shihan = Licensed master and keeper of Shinsengumi sword heritage.

Menkyo Kaiden (Full Transmission)

Typical gap since previous grade: 120 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Highest koryu scroll. Living Soke and absolute global guarantor of the tradition.

Symbolism & Meaning

Menkyo Kaiden = 10th Soke and supreme head of Tennen Rishin-ryu school.
