This ladder is not yet attributed to a specific organisation. Federations differ in belt colours and time requirements.

Hyohō Niten Ichi-ryu is the famous samurai koryu school created by Miyamoto Musashi in the 17th century. The licensure cascade (Shoden, Chuden, Okuden, Menkyo Kaiden) evaluates simultaneous dual sword use (Daito & Kodachi in Nito Seiho), parrying with the short blade, and striking with the long blade.

Shoden (Beginning Transmission)

Typical gap since previous grade: 12 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Basic single long sword techniques (Tachi Seiho) from Miyamoto Musashi's legacy.

Symbolism & Meaning

Entry into the classical school of legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi.

Chuden (Middle Transmission)

Typical gap since previous grade: 24 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Mastery of fighting with two swords simultaneously (Nito Seiho) and Kodachi short sword.

Symbolism & Meaning

Core principle: harmonious use of the long and short sword.

Okuden (Deep Transmission)

Typical gap since previous grade: 36 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Advanced hidden techniques, disarms, and fluid stance transitions without thinking.

Symbolism & Meaning

Realization of the Mu-shin (empty mind) state amidst combat.

Menkyo (Teaching License)

Typical gap since previous grade: 48 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Bojutsu staff and Jutte combat, permission to teach and impart the Book of Five Rings philosophy.

Symbolism & Meaning

License to preserve and spread Musashi's masterful legacy.

Menkyo Kaiden (Full Transmission)

Highest scroll proving total unity with the Way of Two Heavens as One.
