This ladder is not yet attributed to a specific organisation. Federations differ in belt colours and time requirements.

Kashima Shinto-ryu, founded by legendary swordsman Tsukahara Bokuden in 16th-century Japan, is an ancient samurai koryu school. Its 5-license hierarchy (Kirigami, Mokuroku, Menkyo, Shihan, Menkyo Kaiden) evaluates Kenjutsu sword kata with heavy Bokken, Iaijutsu drawing, and the ultimate Ichi-no-tachi single strike.

Kirigami (Entry Scroll)

Typical gap since previous grade: 12 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Koryu Kamae sword stances, basic Ichi no Tachi cuts, and dōjō etiquette.

Symbolism & Meaning

Ancient koryu school founded by Tsukahara Bokuden in 16th century at Kashima Shrine.

Mokuroku (Full Catalog Scroll)

Typical gap since previous grade: 36 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Mastery of paired Kenjutsu forms, Sojutsu spear, and Bojutsu staff combat.

Symbolism & Meaning

Official scroll confirming mastery of the complete samurai weapon arsenal.

Menkyo (Teaching License)

Typical gap since previous grade: 60 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Jujutsu immobilization sets, Tanto dagger combat, and Heiho strategy.

Symbolism & Meaning

Teaching license authorizing independent instruction of Bokuden's tradition.

Shihan (Senior Master)

Typical gap since previous grade: 96 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Secret Shinto spiritual teachings, meditation, and high tactical coordination.

Symbolism & Meaning

Shihan responsible for ritual ceremonies and sword transmission purity.

Menkyo Kaiden (Full Transmission)

Requirements & Focus

Highest scroll proving complete understanding of "The sword that gives life".

Symbolism & Meaning
