General overview of grades

This ladder is not yet attributed to a specific organisation. Federations differ in belt colours and time requirements.

Hakko-ryu Jujutsu, founded by Ryuho Okuyama in 1941 (derived from Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu), uses a master system from 1st Dan through licensed Shihan, Kaiden Shihan, and Menkyo Kaiden titles. Ranks evaluate meridian and pressure point locking (Koho Shiatsu) to neutralize attackers without permanent injury.

1st Dan – Shodan (Black Belt)

Typical gap since previous grade: 24 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Basic master level. Self-defense techniques off-balancing without muscle power.

Symbolism & Meaning

Eighth Light = Spectrum of purple color. Founded by Ryuho Okuyama in 1941.

2nd Dan – Nidan

Typical gap since previous grade: 12 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Application of pressure techniques to Keiraku meridians and points in combat.

Symbolism & Meaning

Disabling opponent by pain without causing permanent injury.

3rd Dan – Sandan

Typical gap since previous grade: 24 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Advanced escapes and immobilizations against armed attackers (knife, stick).

Symbolism & Meaning

Harmony of breath, movement, and perfect timing.

4th Dan – Yondan (Genshin Mokuroku)

Typical gap since previous grade: 36 monthsestimate

Shihan (Master Instructor)

Typical gap since previous grade: 48 monthsestimate

Requirements & Focus

Awarded purple belt, right to teach original Hakko-ryu, and Shiatsu therapy.

Symbolism & Meaning

Master of not only martial skill but also Japanese healing acupressure and medicine.

Kaiden Shihan (Highest Master)

Requirements & Focus

Full revelation of all secret holds and principles of supreme softness. Personal student of Soke.

Symbolism & Meaning

Kaiden Shihan = Grandmaster carrying the very heart of the Eighth Light.
